About Michael
With more than 20 years advising on insurance and commercial litigation – including working in both top tier and boutique firms – Michael has significant expertise and experience in his area.
Michael is the Partner in Charge of Carter Newell’s Sydney office. He has a diverse practice spanning a wide range of insurance clauses including contract works/construction risk, industrial special risks, professional indemnity, medical malpractice, employment practices liability and general liability. He has particular expertise advising both insurers and insureds in large scale complex property and construction losses and has been involved in some of Australia’s most high-profile disputes in this area.
Michael also specialises in complex commercial litigation and class actions across most Australian jurisdictions, as well as private arbitrations, particularly in the construction, financial services and allied health space. Described as a ‘lawyer’s lawyer’, Michael regularly acts for solicitors and barristers in professional liability disputes.
In addition to his law degree, Michael has first class honours in developmental neurobiology and maintains strong connections with the health sector – providing advice to insurers and insureds in the medical and allied health space.
Michael is an active member of various industry groups including the Australian Professional Indemnity Group, the Australian Insurance Law Association, Property and Liability Discussion Group, the Engineering Discussion Group and the Medical Law Society of NSW.
