About Paul
Holding the position of Managing Partner of Carter Newell for more than 20 years, Paul has played a pivotal role in the establishment, growth and continued success of the firm.
Paul is also highly regarded in the legal industry for his leadership and expertise, with more than three decades of experience practicing in the areas of insurance and aviation law.
Today, in his role as Chair of Partners, Paul takes an active role in the firm’s strategic direction and business development strategy and pursuits – actively contributing to the culture and success of the firm. A collaborative, proactive and personable leader, he has a demonstrated ability to build, grow and maintain high-performing teams, who are focused on exceptional client service.
Under Paul’s leadership, the firm has navigated changing client and market expectations and consistently achieved operational effectiveness. Paul has guided the firm through the adoption of new technology, information security and quality management systems, adopted processes and initiatives relating to diversity and inclusion, and ensured the firm was operating in line with best practice standards.
In practice, Paul advises on all aspects of insurance law – from general, property and injury liability through to professional liability and aviation. He is responsible for some of the firm’s most significant client relationships – including with some of Australia’s leading ASX and private companies.
His extensive experience in the local and international insurance markets means he is regularly approached by underwriters and brokers to assist with the front end management of major corporate and institutional accounts –providing advice with respect to risk management and claims management issues.
Paul is appointed to the TAGLaw® Advisory Board, is a member of Australian Insurance Law Association, the Australian Professional Indemnity Group, and the Aviation Law Association of Australia and New Zealand.
Recognised for his leadership and expertise, Paul is a former winner of the Australasian Law Awards in the category of Law Firm Leader of the Year (<200 lawyers) and is recognised by Best Lawyers in Australia and Doyles Guide.
More personally, Paul is passionate and committed to raising awareness and acceptance in relation to diversity and inclusion and has led several initiatives for Carter Newell and the broader legal community in this regard. He continues to lead the firm’s diversity and inclusion committee and is an appointed member of the Queensland Law Society Equity & Diversity Committee.
